South remakes in Hindi have become a sure shot formula for success, and in the last few years, I have seen some amazing Hindi remakes on screen with many more in the offing in the next few years as well. Films like Singham have been spun into a franchise of their own, even setting up the base for a whole cop universe, so South remakes do offer a lot of bankability on the box office. And now, adding to my excitement, filmmaker Karan Johar has acquired the remake rights of the Malayalam film Hridayam.

I am so delighted and honoured to share this news with you. Dharma Productions & Fox Star Studios have acquired the rights to a beautiful, coming-of-age love story, #Hridayam in Hindi, Tamil & Telugu – all the way from the south, the world of Malayalam cinema. pic.twitter.com/NPjIqwhz8l

The story of Hridayam follows the journey of its protagonist Arun, played by Pranav, from age 17 to 30, as he goes on a journey of self-discovery due to some unforeseen circumstances in his life. It was a critical and commercial success and reintroduced the once obsolete audio cassettes and limited edition vinyl records in India.
